Russia & former USSR Info

Within a long period of time Russia had been consolidating the regions, which were not parts of Russia in regards to their ethnical and cultural roots. They joined the Russian Empire voluntary, because this gave them the autonomous independence and the protection against external enemies at the same time. After the Revolution of 1917, when the Russian Empire was destroyed and the new state, USSR, was created, all these countries automatically became the parts of the USSR (except Finland and Poland. These two countries became independent from Russian in 1917). In December 1991 the USSR was broken up. All former USSR countries became independent. Most of them re-united later in the CIS - a formal union, which carries out mostly consulting functions. Only Baltic countries did not join the CIS. They have chosen the integration with the European Union.
